The findings suggest that a taste for carbs was not only beneficial but essential for the development of the human brain, as starch provided glucose, the brain’s primary fuel source, long before the advent of agriculture. This research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates that the human oral microbiome evolved alongside a diet rich in starchy foods, with specific bacterial strains adapted to break down starch being present in both Neanderthals and early humans.
- The study reconstructed the oldest known oral microbiome from a 100,000-year-old Neanderthal, revealing the presence of starch-digesting bacteria in their dental plaque, a trait nearly absent in primates.
- These findings refute the idea that Neanderthals were primarily carnivorous, as their diet likely included significant amounts of cooked tubers, roots, and seeds, which provided the necessary glucose for brain expansion.
- The research highlights that the negative stigma around carbohydrates is misplaced; the real issue lies in the quality of carbs, with whole-food sources like vegetables, legumes, and whole grains being associated with lower disease risk and longer life.
- While some studies, such as the 2017 PURE study, suggested higher carbohydrate intake was linked to increased mortality, the current research emphasizes that the evolutionary and biological context of carbohydrate consumption must be considered, particularly the distinction between refined and whole-food carbohydrates.
Recent large-scale studies have challenged long-standing beliefs about carbohydrates, revealing that the quality and source of carbs—not just the quantity—are critical to health outcomes. Far from being universally harmful, certain carbohydrates are essential for metabolic health, longevity, and disease prevention.
Debunking the “Carbs Make You Fat” Myth
The idea that carbohydrates inherently cause weight gain has been widely popularized, especially by low-carb and keto diet advocates. However, comprehensive research shows that excess calories—not carbs themselves—are the primary driver of weight gain. A major 2018 study, the DIETFITS trial, compared diets with 48% and 30% of energy from carbohydrates and found nearly identical weight loss (5.3 kg vs. 6 kg) after 12 months when calorie intake was controlled.
Moreover, whole grains and high-fiber carbohydrates are linked to better weight management. A 2019 meta-analysis found that consuming about 50 grams of whole grains daily was associated with a 7–11% lower risk of weight gain or obesity. These foods promote satiety, support gut health, and help regulate blood sugar.
Carbohydrate Intake and Longevity: The U-Shaped Curve
A landmark 2018 study published in The Lancet Public Health, based on over 15,400 participants and confirmed by a meta-analysis of more than 432,000 people, revealed a U-shaped relationship between carbohydrate intake and mortality. Both very low (<40% of calories) and very high (>70%) carbohydrate diets were linked to increased mortality, while moderate intake (50–55% of calories) was associated with the lowest risk.
From age 50, moderate carb consumers were estimated to live 4 years longer than those on very low-carb diets. Crucially, the study found that the source of protein and fat in low-carb diets mattered: replacing carbs with animal-based fats and proteins increased mortality risk, while plant-based alternatives (like legumes, nuts, and vegetables) were linked to lower risk.
