Earl Nightingale was born in Kansas City in 1924 to Edgar Earl Nightingale and his wife Jeanette. He attended the University of Missouri where he studied journalism, but left after a year because he wanted to be a radio announcer.
He entered the Navy in 1943 and served as a radioman on a submarine tender until 1945 when World War II ended. After returning home from the war, he married his high school sweetheart Shirley Ann Pugh in 1946.
