Apple emphasizes privacy-first AI with its Apple Intelligence framework, processing much of your data locally and using Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for cloud-based tasks—designed to prevent Apple or third parties from accessing your data. This architecture, including end-to-end encryption for cloud AI, is considered a “brand-new standard for privacy in AI” by experts.
Google uses a hybrid AI approach across Android, balancing on-device processing with cloud-based models. While Google claims data is protected in secure data centers and not shared with third parties, some data still leaves the device, increasing potential exposure compared to Apple’s stricter on-device-first model.
Microsoft has faced criticism—especially for its “Recall” feature in Windows, which logs everything you do on your PC (screenshots, keystrokes, app usage) and stores it locally, raising concerns about surveillance. Though Microsoft argues it’s designed for productivity, the feature was widely seen as “creepy” and sparked backlash, despite being optional.
In summary:
- Apple minimizes spying through strong local processing and encrypted cloud handling.
- Google collects more data via cloud AI but maintains robust security.
- Microsoft has the highest potential for surveillance, especially with features like Recall, even if optional.
Based on privacy architecture and user data exposure, Microsoft’s AI tools are most likely to spy on you, followed by Google, with Apple offering the strongest privacy protections.
Google claims it does not sell user data or share it with third parties for advertising or other purposes without consent. It uses encryption, anonymization, and strict contractual agreements with vendors to protect data in transit and at rest.
For AI services like Gemini in Google Workspace, user prompts are treated as customer data and are not shared outside the organization or used to train models without explicit permission. Human reviewers do not access this data unless authorized.
However, third-party apps connected to Gemini or Google services operate under their own privacy policies, and data shared with them may be subject to different handling. Google also uses Federated Learning and on-device processing to minimize data exposure.
Despite these measures, reports indicate platforms like Gemini may share data with third parties for service operations, and users have limited control over data used in AI training.
Microsoft’s Recall feature captures a screenshot of the user’s screen every five seconds, creating a searchable, AI-indexed history of all activity on the PC. It stores this data locally on compatible Copilot+ PCs, requiring a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), BitLocker encryption, and Windows Hello biometric authentication.
Despite being stored locally and encrypted, Recall has significant surveillance risks:
- Captures everything visible on screen, including passwords, financial data, private messages (even from apps like Signal and WhatsApp), medical records, and confidential documents.
- Initially launched enabled by default, though now requires double opt-in during setup.
- No content moderation — does not automatically hide or filter sensitive information like credit card numbers or login credentials, despite some filtering improvements.
- PIN access only — after initial biometric setup, users can access Recall data using just a Windows Hello PIN, which can be guessed or shared.
- Third-party access risk — local administrators, malware, or remote access tools (e.g., TeamViewer) with user-level access can potentially extract Recall data.
- No opt-out for others — if someone you communicate with has Recall enabled, your private messages can be captured and stored without your knowledge.
- Enterprise concerns — data is subject to eDiscovery and regulatory scrutiny (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and organizations must actively disable it via Group Policy to ensure compliance.
Though Microsoft claims Recall data never leaves the device and cannot be accessed by Microsoft, experts and regulators (including the UK’s ICO) have raised alarms over its potential misuse by attackers or as a long-term surveillance vector.
