Dario Amodei drew a public line, refusing to allow Anthropic’s AI (Claude) to be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance, calling these its “two red lines.” This ethical stance was widely praised by AI safety advocates. 

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has publicly upheld two ethical “red lines” for the use of its AI model, Claude: no mass surveillance of Americans and no use in fully autonomous weapons without human oversight.  He maintains these boundaries are essential to align AI deployment with American values and technological reliability, despite intense pressure from the Pentagon. 

Amodei argues that AI systems are still prone to errors—such as misidentifying targets or enabling unchecked surveillance through bulk data analysis—and that entrusting life-or-death decisions to such systems is premature and dangerous. He emphasizes that Anthropic remains committed to supporting U.S. national security but insists ethical guardrails must be preserved. 

This stance has drawn praise from AI safety advocates and sparked broader industry debate about corporate responsibility in military AI development. While the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk” and cut ties, Amodei continues to advocate for these principles, calling the government’s response “retaliatory and unprecedented.” 

2. OpenAI Rushes Into Pentagon Agreement

Sam Altman quickly signed a deal with the Department of Defense, perceived as an attempt to seize a multibillion-dollar contract from Anthropic.  Critics labeled it opportunistic, especially given the timing before a U.S. military strike on Iran. 

3. Mass Uninstall of ChatGPT

Following the Pentagon announcement, ChatGPT uninstall rates spiked by 295% day-over-day, signaling user discontent over OpenAI’s perceived militarization of AI. 

4. Altman Admits He “Shouldn’t Have Rushed”

In a public mea culpa, Altman conceded OpenAI “shouldn’t have rushed” the deal and announced plans to amend terms to prohibit surveillance of U.S. persons—after the fact. 

5. No Mention of Autonomous Weapons in Altman’s Revisions

While Altman addressed surveillance, his revised terms omitted any prohibition on AI-powered weapon systems, leaving a critical ethical gap unaddressed.

6. Anthropic Blacklisted by Pentagon
