To get better at talking on-camera in just 10 minutes, focus on shifting your mindset and physically prepping your voice. The key is to stop treating the camera like a piece of equipment and start treating it like a conversation with a friend.
The 10-Minute Warm-Up Routine
- Minutes 1–3: Physical & Vocal Prep
- Loosen Up: Shake your body or do a quick workout to shed stiffness.
- Facial Stretches: Make big yawning motions and exaggerated chewing movements to relax your jaw.
- Vocal Warm-up: Hum for five full breaths and do lip trills (blowing air through closed lips).
- Minutes 4–6: Mental Shift
- The “Friend” Hack: Visualize someone you trust standing right behind the lens. Say their name out loud before you start—it instantly relaxes your tone.
- Set the Mode: Decide if you are in “Coffee Mode” (chill, casual chat) or “Presentation Mode” (driving a specific point).
- Minutes 7–10: Practice & Record
- Record One Line at a Time: Don’t feel pressured to speak for 10 minutes straight. Record one clear sentence, pause, then do the next. You can edit out the silences later.
- Eliminate “Ums”: Focus solely on removing filler words. A slight pause is better and much easier to edit than an “um”.
Essential Performance Tips
- Eye Contact: Look directly into the camera lens, not the screen. This creates a one-to-one connection with the viewer.
- Energy Levels: The camera “eats” energy. Speak with slightly more enthusiasm and volume than you would in a normal conversation to avoid appearing flat.
- Body Language: Use your hands naturally. Imagine a “box” in front of your chest to keep gestures within the frame.
- Breathe from the Diaphragm: Shallow breathing makes you sound tired or rushed. Breathe from your stomach to give your voice more power.
