A recent report titled “I Worked At A Google Data Center: What I Saw Will Shock You” highlights significant concerns about labor practices and economic impacts associated with Google’s data centers. The article, based on interviews with workers and researchers, reveals that Google increasingly relies on temporary, contract, and vendor workers (TVCs) who perform the same tasks as full-time employees but are paid significantly less, lack benefits, and face job insecurity. Shannon Wait, a former contractor at a Google data center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, described working under harsh conditions, including lifting heavy equipment without proper tools, enduring hot environments, and suffering injuries without access to health insurance. She also reported being told she could not discuss pay, with a superior reportedly escorting her out of the building after raising the topic.
The report indicates that Google has systematically replaced full-time employees with contractors, particularly from 2020 onward, a shift that has led to a sense of exploitation and instability among TVCs. Contract workers are typically hired on three-month agreements with no guarantee of renewal, and after two years, they are terminated and barred from reapplying for six months. This practice contributes to a cycle of uncertainty and financial strain, with many relying on unemployment benefits after their contracts end.
Beyond labor issues, the article discusses the broader economic impact of data centers on local communities. In places like Abeline, Texas, and Oregon, the influx of temporary construction workers has driven up short-term rental prices and rents, pricing out long-term residents. Despite promises of high-paying, permanent jobs, data centers create relatively few long-term positions, and the jobs that are created often involve shifting workers between information services rather than generating new employment. Additionally, municipalities often offer substantial tax abatements to attract data centers, reducing their ability to fund public services despite the economic benefits being limited.
Google has also been criticized for using shell companies to obscure its identity during negotiations for tax incentives, while simultaneously engaging in public relations efforts such as donating Chromebooks to schools. The company’s use of contractors may also serve financial reporting purposes, as it allows Google to avoid counting these workers as employees, thereby improving key financial metrics like revenue per headcount. The true number of contractors is unknown, but estimates suggest they may outnumber full-time Google employees.
