Jezebel taught us lessons about marriage we should no longer ignore

Jezebel’s life offers several critical lessons about marriage that remain relevant and should not be ignored. Her marriage to King Ahab exemplifies a union that violated God’s commandments, as Ahab married a foreigner, Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, who worshipped Baal and Asherah. This union was not only a breach of divine instruction but also a catalyst for spiritual decline, as it led Ahab to abandon the worship of the Lord and establish the worship of Baal in Israel. The Bible explicitly states that Ahab “sold himself to do evil in the sight of the Lord” because of Jezebel’s influence, highlighting how one partner’s spiritual compromise can lead to widespread apostasy.

One key lesson is the danger of marrying someone who does not share your faith and values. The marriage between Ahab and Jezebel—described as a union between “the child of light” and “the princess of darkness”—created a spiritual battleground within the home and the nation. This illustrates how a marriage lacking spiritual alignment can lead to the erosion of godly principles and the entrenchment of idolatry. The consequences were severe: Jezebel used her influence to promote Baal worship, destroy prophets of the Lord, and manipulate her husband into committing acts of injustice, such as the murder of Naboth to seize his vineyard.

Another lesson centers on the dynamics of power and submission within marriage. Jezebel’s strong, controlling personality thrived because Ahab was passive and easily influenced. This imbalance allowed her to dominate the relationship, with one source noting that “Ahab was the king, but Jezebel was the one who really wore the pants in the family”. This dynamic reflects a spiritual pattern where the “Jezebel spirit” operates through manipulation, rebellion, and a desire to control others, often under the guise of leadership. The result is division, strife, and a breakdown of godly authority, which contradicts the biblical model where the husband is called to lovingly lead and the wife to support him in reverence to God.
