Norton Antivirus: Known for consuming excessive system resources, slowing down performance, and offering protection no better than Windows Defender. It has a history of invasive behavior and is often linked to phishing scams.
McAfee Antivirus: Pre-installed on many new PCs, McAfee is resource-heavy, causes frequent pop-ups, and often installs without consent. It provides minimal security benefit while significantly degrading system performance.
CCleaner: Once a popular tool, it now poses security risks due to past malware incidents and data collection practices. It can install unwanted software and may compromise privacy rather than enhance it.
Advanced SystemCare & Glary Utilities: These “optimization” tools promise performance improvements but often slow down systems, make unapproved changes, and bundle unwanted software. They are largely ineffective and can cause instability.
Shopping Browser Extensions (e.g., Honey, Rakuten): Track browsing habits, flood users with pop-ups, and can compromise security during online transactions. Manual deal searching is safer and more effective.
Free VPNs: Many collect and sell user data, defeat their own purpose, and are vulnerable to breaches. Use trusted, paid providers with transparent privacy policies instead.
Google Chrome (if avoiding tracking): While functional, it’s not ideal for privacy-focused users. Consider Brave or Firefox for better privacy protection.
Flash Player: Deprecated and unsafe—no longer supported by Adobe and a major security risk. Remove it immediately if still installed.
Media Players from Unofficial Sources: Often bundle malware. Use VLC Media Player instead—free, trusted, and safe.
Avoid programs that promise “free” downloads, registry fixes, or “speed boosts”—they are typically bloatware or malware in disguise.
Always download software from official websites and avoid third-party installers to prevent bundled adware.
Why are free VPNs so risky despite offering ‘secure’ connections?
Free VPNs are risky because they often compromise the very privacy and security they promise to protect. Instead of charging users, they monetize through invasive and dangerous practices:
- Data Collection and Sale: Many free VPNs log and sell browsing history, IP addresses, and device data to third parties like advertisers or data brokers. A 2023 study found an exposed database containing 25 million free VPN users’ records.
- Malware and Security Flaws: Around 20% of free VPNs have been flagged as malware. Many use outdated or weak encryption (like PPTP), lack kill switches, and suffer from DNS/IP leaks, leaving users exposed to man-in-the-middle attacks.
- Excessive Permissions and Tracking: Free apps often request unnecessary permissions (e.g., access to accounts, logs, location). Research shows 80% of free Android VPNs ask for access to sensitive data, and two-thirds use third-party tracking libraries.
- Intrusive Ads and Browser Hijacking: To generate revenue, free VPNs bombard users with ads or redirect traffic. Some malicious extensions have 9 million+ installs and hijack browsing sessions, stealing data or redirecting to phishing sites.
- Poor Performance and Unreliability: Overcrowded servers lead to slow speeds, frequent disconnections, and data caps (often under 500MB/month). This makes them ineffective for streaming, secure browsing, or work.
- Lack of Accountability: Free services rarely offer customer support or transparent privacy policies. In contrast, reputable paid VPNs undergo independent audits and enforce strict no-logs policies.
Bottom line: If you’re not paying, you are the product. For real privacy, use trusted paid services like ProtonVPN (free tier available), NordVPN, or Surfshark, which prioritize security over profit.
