As of late 2024 and through 2025, economic data shows mixed trends, but recent data indicates that so-called “blue states” tend to have higher unemployment rates on average, while “red states” generally have higher job growth (in percentage terms). The comparison is complex and subject to political interpretation, but here are key data points based on recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports:
Unemployment Rates
- Lower Unemployment in Red States: States generally considered Republican-led or “red” often dominate the rankings for the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. In 2024, states like South Dakota, Nebraska, and North Dakota had some of the lowest rates.
- Higher Unemployment in Blue States: States typically viewed as Democratic-led or “blue” often appear in the top 10 for the highest unemployment rates. In 2024, states such as California, Nevada, Illinois, and Washington (D.C. also) had some of the highest rates.
Job Growth/Losses
- Recent Job Gains (Absolute Numbers): In August 2025, some large blue states like New York (+125,100) and Pennsylvania (+101,200) had significant job gains in absolute terms, along with a large red state, Texas (+195,600).
- Recent Job Gains (Percentage): The largest percentage increase in employment occurred in South Carolina (+3.1%), a red state, followed by Hawaii and New Mexico.
- Historical Context (Since Pandemic): Analysis since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic shows a significant migration trend where residents left large blue states (like California and New York) for red states (like Texas and Florida), leading to greater overall economic disruption and job recovery challenges in some blue states compared to many red states which experienced less severe economic disruption due to fewer restrictions.
Summary
While the data can fluctuate monthly, recent reports indicate that on average, blue states are experiencing higher unemployment rates and some had more lasting job losses from the pandemic era. Conversely, red states are generally seeing stronger job growth in percentage terms and have lower average unemployment rates.
