Watch Out for Bikes (Seriously!): Amsterdam has more bikes than people, and cyclists have the right of way. Never walk in the red-paved bike lanes, and always look both ways before crossing a street, as bikes often won’t stop for you.
Use Public Transport, Not Cars/Ubers: The city’s public transport system (trams, metros, buses, and ferries) is excellent, efficient, and cost-effective. Driving a car is not recommended due to narrow streets, heavy bike traffic, expensive parking, and limited car access in some areas.
Tap Water is Safe to Drink: Amsterdam’s tap water is some of the cleanest in the world. Carry a reusable bottle to save money and reduce plastic waste.
“Coffeeshops” vs. “Cafés”: A café is a place for coffee, pastries, and food. A coffeeshop is a licensed establishment where cannabis products are legally sold.
Avoid Public Cannabis Consumption: While cannabis is legal in designated coffeeshops, smoking it in public places (like sidewalks or parks) can result in a fine. Be respectful of local laws and customs.
Be Prepared for Unpredictable Weather: Amsterdam’s weather changes quickly. Dress in layers and always carry a rain jacket or a compact umbrella.
Carry a Physical ID: It is the law to carry a valid form of photo identification (like your passport if you are non-EU) on you at all times; a digital copy is not sufficient.
