The powerful quote, “There’s a battle for your soul, it’s happening right now,” comes from former U.S. Navy SEAL and CIA Contractor Shawn Ryan during a deeply viral episode of The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett.

In the interview, Shawn Ryan discusses his profound spiritual transformation, explaining how elite military tactical frameworks map perfectly onto a hidden, daily spiritual warfare between good and evil. He highlights the concept of “spiritual oppression”—where the enemy doesn’t control your body, but instead orchestrates surrounding chaos (financial ruin, relationship breakdowns, and chronic distractions) to subtly steer you away from your true purpose.

Here are 10 key examples of how this “battle for your soul” manifests in everyday life, framed through both Shawn Ryan’s insights and elite Navy SEAL mindsets:

10 Examples of the Battle for Your Soul

The Trap of Continuous Distraction: Over-indexing on mind-numbing entertainment, endless scrolling, or short-form media. The goal isn’t to make you inherently evil, but simply to keep you too distracted to ever tap into your higher purpose.
The Temptation of Comfort Over Growth: Choosing ease, safety, and complacency. In SEAL training, choosing comfort is how recruits fail; spiritually, over-comfort numbs the soul’s drive to fulfill its true potential.
The “Oppression” of Financial and Health Stress: Facing sudden, cascading external crises that induce panic. The battle here is keeping your mind anchored in truth rather than surrendering to despair.
The Pressure to Compromise Ethics for Success: Facing a crossroads where cutting a corner or acting selfishly yields immediate reward. True leadership and spiritual fortitude mean putting integrity and the collective good first.
The Illusion of Social Media Perfectionism: Cultivating a flawless online image while hiding internal chaos. The battle is choosing raw, painful inner work over shallow public validation.
The Fear of Losing Status or Income: Facing professional or social backlash when standing up for your faith or deeply held principles. Ryan experienced this firsthand when major advertisers dropped him for shifting to faith-based content.
Sinking Under Pressure vs. Rising on Training: When crisis strikes, the default human response is panic. The spiritual battle requires a disciplined mindset—like the SEAL concept of “sinking to the level of your training”—relying on deep spiritual habits rather than raw emotion.
The “Burn the Boats” Commitment: Standing at a crossroads and holding onto safety nets. Winning the battle for your soul means fully committing to your path with absolute certainty, eliminating any option to retreat into old, destructive habits.
Pride and Intellectual Elitist Triggers: Believing you are entirely self-made or the sole arbiter of your fate. The spiritual counter-offensive requires recognizing an identity rooted in something vastly greater than your own skin and bones.
The Attack on Close Relationships: Unexplained friction, bitterness, or isolation within families. The battle lies in realizing that your loved ones are not the enemy; rather, external spiritual forces are exploiting your exhaustion to fracture your support network.

Tactical Breakdown: The Battlefield of the Soul

Battlefield Example	Enemy Strategy (Oppression)	SEAL / Spiritual Counter-Strategy
1. Digital Distraction	Flood the mind with noise to drown out your true calling.	Keep your head on a swivel: Stay fiercely intentional with your attention.
2. Sudden External Crises	Use financial/health stress to break your spirit.	Box Breathing (4-4-4-4): Regulate your nervous system to stay logical, not emotional.
3. Temptation of Complacency	Make comfort so appealing that you stop striving for growth.	Embrace Discomfort: Daily practice of lean execution and voluntary hardship.
4. Ethical Crossroads	Offer shortcut successes at the cost of your moral integrity.	Service Over Status: Put the mission and the team ahead of self-recognition.
5. Social Pressures / Backlash	Induce fear of losing income or popularity if you speak your truth.	Stand Firm: Pivot toward conviction; treat financial losses as tests of faith.
6. Overwhelming Self-Doubt	Weaponize inner insecurities to force you to “ring the bell” and quit.	“Why Not Me?”: Reframe adversity as a tailored testing ground for your resilience.
7. Decision Paralysis	Keep you hovering indecisively between two paths.	Burn the Boats: Eliminate all escape routes; commit entirely to the righteous path.
8. Internal Pride	Convince you that you don’t need divine or communal support.	Rooted Identity: Anchor your mindset in eternal truth rather than personal ego.
9. Exhaustion / Burnout	Wait until you are physically depleted to launch a psychological attack.	“Stop when you’re done”: Push past perceived physical limits through pure mental fortitude.
10. Relationship Attrition	Create bitter division between you and your closest allies.	Unified Front: Overcommunicate, practice selflessness, and recognize the real invisible conflict.
