Hackers primarily use malware, phishing links, and network interception to steal tokens the moment a user logs in or interacts with a compromised service.  Once stolen, these tokens act like a photocopy of a season pass at an amusement park; the attacker can use the copy to access resources indefinitely while the legitimate user remains unaware because the original token still works on their device. 

Common attack vectors include:

• Malware on client devices: Malicious code copies session tokens directly from a user’s browser or application after they log in. 
• Phishing and social engineering: Users are tricked into entering credentials or approving malicious transactions on fake websites or via deceptive emails. 
• Network interception: Attackers capture tokens as they travel between the client and server through unsecured proxies or routers. 
• Unvetted third-party integrations: Unauthorized or poorly secured apps connected to SaaS platforms can harvest OAuth tokens without user knowledge. 

Protection strategies involve:

• Enabling token binding (or sender-constrained tokens) so tokens only work from the specific device they were issued to.
• Implementing short-lived token lifetimes and using continuous access evaluation to re-validate user risk in real time. 
• Monitoring and revoking unused or suspicious third-party app connections and regularly clearing stored cookies and tokens. 
• Avoiding public Wi-Fi and clicking on suspicious links, while using security scanners to detect malicious smart contracts or phishing sites. 

Token trust, particularly in cryptocurrency, refers to the assumption that once your assets are in a decentralized wallet or a reputable exchange, they are secure. However, token theft occurs when attackers steal digital “keys”—either session tokens for web applications or private keys/approvals for crypto wallets—to gain unauthorized access, often bypassing MFA. 

This problem is growing, with personal wallet compromises affecting over 80,000 unique victims in 2025 and 2026 showing an increase in sophisticated phishing.

Emotional and Psychological Effects

Individuals with a history of cumulative trauma often experience a broad spectrum of emotional and psychological impacts, many of which are protective adaptations that can become challenging in everyday life. 

• Emotional Numbness/Dysregulation: People may feel a quiet internal collapse and appear calm in stressful situations, which is often a sign of emotional numbness or detachment rather than true peace. They might also struggle to manage intense emotions, leading to anxiety, depression, or sudden irritability and anger.
• Hyperarousal and Vigilance: The brain’s threat-detection system (amygdala) can become hyperactive, leading to a constant state of alertness for danger (hypervigilance), being easily startled, and difficulty relaxing or sleeping. This can cause a person to overreact to seemingly minor triggers, which are echoes of past traumas.
• Intrusive Thoughts and Flashbacks: Individuals may experience unwanted, recurring memories or flashbacks of the traumatic events, feeling as though the trauma is happening again in the present moment.
• Negative Self-Perception and Guilt: Trauma survivors often struggle with feelings of shame, self-blame, and low self-esteem, leading to a diminished sense of self-worth. They may also feel they are a “shadow” of their former selves.
• Foreshortened Future: There can be a loss of hope or limited expectations about life and the future, making it difficult to envision normal life events like stable relationships or career opportunities occurring. 

Behavioral and Social Patterns

These psychological changes often manifest in specific behavioral and social patterns aimed at self-preservation. 

• Difficulty with Trust and Relationships: Due to experiences of betrayal or inconsistency, particularly in childhood, individuals may find it very difficult to form secure attachments, trust others, or open up emotionally. They may be fiercely emotionally independent as a protective measure.
• Avoidance Behaviors: Survivors often avoid people, places, or activities that remind them of the trauma. This can extend to avoiding emotional vulnerability or specific conversations.
• Self-Destructive or Self-Harming Behaviors: As a way to cope with overwhelming pain, individuals may turn to self-medication with drugs or alcohol, high-risk behaviors, or self-harm.
• Empathy and Quiet Strength: Paradoxically, many who have suffered greatly develop a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others because they understand pain firsthand. They often become emotional anchors for others while internalizing their own struggles. 

Potential for Post-Traumatic Growth 

While the impacts are profound, enduring adversity does not mean a person is “doomed to be damaged”. Many individuals exhibit post-traumatic growth (PTG), a process of positive psychological change resulting from their struggle with highly challenging life circumstances. This can lead to: 

• A renewed appreciation of life.
• Deepened, stronger relationships.
• A heightened sense of personal strength and resilience.
• The discovery of new possibilities or a stronger sense of purpose in life.

The Milgram Experiment: Authority Transfers Responsibility

Jiang references the Milgram experiment to illustrate how authority figures can induce people to administer what they believe are painful electric shocks. Participants continued because a man in a lab coat calmly instructed them to proceed—no coercion, just permission. The lesson: people obey not out of cruelty, but because they transfer moral responsibility upward.

This mechanism enables bureaucratic violence—soldiers, officials, and professionals carry out destructive policies while telling themselves, “I’m just doing my job.”

The Asch Conformity Experiment: Consensus Transfers Reality

In the Asch experiment, individuals conform to a group’s false perception—even when the truth is obvious. Jiang explains that when everyone agrees, individuals begin to doubt their own senses. This shows how social consensus can override objective reality, making harmful actions seem normal or necessary.

When authority says “this is needed” and society echoes “yes,” individuals lose both guilt and critical perspective.

Trauma and Pleasure: Engineering Loyalty

Jiang describes how institutions like Sparta or extremist groups use trauma and reward to create absolute loyalty. By destroying a person’s world and then offering safety or ecstasy, they become dependent on their oppressors. This creates warriors who kill not out of hatred, but out of longing for belonging or paradise.

This dynamic explains why people remain loyal to systems that harm them—they’ve been psychologically conditioned to equate survival with obedience.
