The Talmud is a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, serving as a comprehensive record of rabbinic discussions on Jewish law (Halakha), ethics, philosophy, customs, history, and folklore. It consists of two main components: the Mishnah, a written compilation of Jewish oral laws compiled around 200 CE by Rabbi Judah the Prince, and the Gemara, a series of commentaries and debates on the Mishnah that were completed around 500 CE. The Talmud is not a single authored work but a compilation of centuries of scholarly discourse, reflecting the dynamic nature of Jewish thought and tradition. It exists in two primary versions: the Babylonian Talmud, which is more comprehensive and widely studied, and the Jerusalem Talmud, which is less extensive and considered less authoritative. The Talmud plays a crucial role in shaping Jewish law and practice, serving as a foundational guide for daily life, religious observance, and ethical decision-making across diverse Jewish communities. Its study, traditionally conducted in pairs (chevruta) to emphasize discussion and debate, continues to be central to Jewish education and intellectual life.
