The Department of War’s New AI Program LEAKED Video Review

The U.S. Department of War (formerly the Department of Defense) officially rolled out its new enterprise-wide AI platform, GenAI.mil, on December 9, 2025, a launch that was initially anticipated due to earlier leaks of planning documents on GitHub.

GenAI.mil Overview

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth describes GenAI.mil as a secure generative AI platform. It is available to all military personnel, civilians, and contractors. Its purpose is to increase efficiency and impact. The current system is a secure version of Google’s AI tool, Gemini for Government. The department plans to add other AI models to the platform.

Key Details and Controversies

Launch and “Leak”: The official launch occurred in December 2025. However, in June 2025, draft plans for the government’s AI initiatives were exposed on a public GitHub repository. These plans included an ai.gov website.
Purpose: The platform supports deep research, document formatting, and the analysis of video and imagery. The goal is to accelerate AI adoption across the department and create an “AI-first” workforce.
Ethical Concerns: The rollout has drawn attention and controversy, especially regarding the AI’s interpretation of military ethics and law. The AI chatbot has labeled some hypothetical military orders as “unambiguously illegal”. This has led to media headlines that highlight a potential conflict between the AI’s ethical guidelines and past actions by military leadership.
Vendor Contracts: The launch follows contract awards to several tech companies (including Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI) in July 2025 to provide advanced AI capabilities.

The United States Department of War (DOW), formerly known as the Department of Defense, has launched a custom generative AI platform named GenAI.mil, featuring Google’s Gemini for Government as its first integrated tool. As of December 9, 2025, the AI system has been rolled out to all military personnel, civilians, and contractors across the department. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the initiative in an internal memo, stating, “With this launch we are taking a giant step toward mass AI adoption across the Department”.

Gemini is described as “The Department of War’s premier AI model platform” and aims to compress the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) at all operational levels, enabling the department to “out-think, out-decide, and out-pace any adversary”. The platform includes a chatbot and AI-powered assistant, with extensions to other models like ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude visible in interface screenshots. It is hosted on a secured cloud environment with restricted access for unclassified work.

Hegseth emphasized in his memo that AI should be integrated into daily workflows, calling it a “teammate” and urging all personnel to adopt it immediately: “AI should be in your battle rhythm every single day”. The platform is intended to assist with tasks such as summarizing policy handbooks, generating compliance checklists, extracting key terms from statements of work, and creating risk assessments for operational planning.

Despite the rollout, some users reported technical issues, including error messages like “Something went wrong. Please try again later” and a temporarily non-functional website. Internal guidelines caution against using generative AI for decisions involving attribution, targeting, or threat evaluation without human validation, though concerns remain about the moral implications of AI-assisted military decisions.
