The Greco-Roman origins of the Eucharist are deeply rooted in the cultural and social practices of the ancient Mediterranean world, particularly in the structure and rituals of formal banquets known as deipnon (evening meals) and symposion (celebratory drinking gatherings). Early Christian Eucharistic celebrations mirrored these Greco-Roman meal customs, involving reclining on couches in a triclinium (a room with three sides of couches), eating with hands, and following a sequence of meal, prayer, libation, and communal discourse.
Key elements of Greco-Roman influence include:
- The deipnon as a substantial evening meal, often including bread, wine (mixed with water), and simple foods like fish or vegetables, reflecting the economic realities of the time.
- The symposion, a post-meal ritual where wine was poured as a libation, songs were sung, scriptures read, and teachings delivered—functions that later became central to Christian liturgy.
- The use of prayers, hymns, and communal singing, such as the Phos Hilaron, which has roots in early Christian symposia and survives in Orthodox liturgical practice today.
Scholars like Andrew B. McGowan argue that the early Eucharist was fundamentally a Greco-Roman banquet, blending Jewish meal traditions with Hellenistic social forms. The ritualized sharing of bread and wine, originally part of a common meal, evolved into a sacred rite, with the birkat ha-mazon (Jewish grace after meals) and improvised prayers forming the basis of early Eucharistic thanksgiving.
Over time, as Christianity grew and moved into public spaces, the intimate, meal-based form of the Eucharist gave way to a more formal, sacrificial liturgy. By the late 2nd century, the communal meal became vestigial, and the Eucharist transformed into a symbolic act of remembrance and sacrifice, while still retaining its foundational structure shaped by Greco-Roman banquet culture.
