The Apostolic Fathers provide strong early testimony affirming the authenticity and credibility of Paul’s apostleship and teachings.
- Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–107 AD), writing in the early 2nd century, referred to Paul as an apostle and cited his letters as authoritative, indicating that Paul’s writings were already being accepted as Scripture within the church.
- Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 69–155 AD), a direct disciple of the Apostle John, quoted Paul’s letters extensively in his own epistle to the Philippians, treating them as divinely inspired and on par with the teachings of Jesus.
- Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 130–202 AD), a prominent early church leader, explicitly defended Paul’s apostleship and affirmed that Paul’s gospel was consistent with that of the other apostles, emphasizing that Paul’s message was not a deviation but a fulfillment of Christ’s mission to the Gentiles.
- The Didache (c. 70–120 AD), one of the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament, reflects themes and ethical teachings found in Paul’s letters, suggesting a widespread acceptance of Pauline theology in the early church.
These early Christian leaders did not challenge Paul’s authority or truthfulness; instead, they upheld his teachings as divinely inspired, confirming that his apostleship and message were received as genuine and trustworthy from the very beginning.
