Candidates for governor of Ohio in 2026 must meet specific qualifications and adhere to filing deadlines and requirements. The candidate must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Ohio, and a qualified elector, with no restrictions on holding other federal or state offices. The term of office is four years, and candidates must file a joint petition with their lieutenant gubernatorial running mate, as candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run as joint candidates.
Filing deadlines are set for February 4, 2026, by 4 p.m. for party candidates and May 4, 2026, by 4 p.m. for independent candidates. The filing fee is $150 for statewide candidates. Independent candidates must gather 5,000 valid signatures, while major party candidates need 1,000 signatures, and minor recognized parties require 500. All paperwork must be submitted to the Ohio Secretary of State’s Elections Division in Columbus.
