It is composed of two main parts: the Mishnah, a written compilation of Jewish oral law finalized around 200 CE in Israel, and the Gemara, which consists of rabbinic commentary and analysis on the Mishnah, developed over the following centuries. The Mishnah was created in response to the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, which led Jewish scholars to fear the loss of oral traditions and prompted the formal codification of Jewish law to preserve religious continuity. The Talmud exists in two primary versions: the Jerusalem Talmud, compiled in the Land of Israel around 400 CE, and the more comprehensive and widely studied Babylonian Talmud, which was finalized around 500 CE in Babylonia. The Babylonian Talmud became the dominant authority in Jewish scholarship due to the strong Jewish communities established in Babylonia after the Roman destruction of Jerusalem.
