SpaceX is lowering 4,400 Starlink satellites from an altitude of approximately 550 km to 480 km primarily to enhance space safety and reduce collision risks in the increasingly crowded Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Key Reasons for the Move:
- Improved Deorbiting: Lowering the orbit increases atmospheric drag, significantly reducing the time it takes for dead or malfunctioning satellites to reenter Earth’s atmosphere. This cuts ballistic decay time from 4+ years to just a few months, minimizing long-term space debris.
- Solar Minimum Preparedness: As Earth approaches a period of low solar activity (solar minimum), the upper atmosphere becomes less dense, reducing natural drag. Lowering satellites now ensures they deorbit faster during this low-drag phase.
- Reduced Collision Risk: The region below 500 km has fewer debris objects and planned satellite constellations, lowering the likelihood of collisions with other spacecraft or space junk.
- Constellation Safety: The reconfiguration is part of a broader effort to manage the growing congestion in LEO, where Starlink satellites now make up roughly two-thirds of all operational satellites worldwide.

- The move, announced by Starlink’s Vice President of Engineering Michael Nicolls, is being coordinated with regulators, other operators, and USSPACECOM.
- This action affects roughly half of the Starlink constellation, which currently includes nearly 9,400 operational satellites.
- The maneuver is not only a safety measure but also a strategic step to free up orbital slots for newer, more advanced satellites and to demonstrate responsible space stewardship amid growing regulatory scrutiny.
