Why You Can’t Lose Weight with Intermittent Fasting (Until You Trigger Autophagy)

You can’t lose weight with intermittent fasting (IF) until you trigger autophagy because IF initially may lead to weight gain if you overeat during the feeding window. However, by fasting long enough to initiate autophagy, you can start to burn stored fat as the body uses stored energy, which eventually leads to weight loss. Autophagy is a process that occurs when the body is low on energy, and can be triggered by fasting for at least 12-24 hours, but may take longer depending on the individual.

Reasons you can’t lose weight with IF until autophagy is triggered

Overeating during feeding windows: A common pitfall of IF is overcompensating for fasting hours by overeating, which can lead to weight gain instead of loss.
Lack of a true caloric deficit: Without a proper deficit, even with IF, you won’t lose weight. IF is a tool to help achieve a deficit, but doesn’t guarantee it if not combined with a healthy diet.
Triggering autophagy: You need to reach a prolonged fasting state to trigger autophagy, which allows your body to start burning stored fat for energy. A short fast alone may not be enough to jumpstart this process.

How autophagy helps with weight loss

Burning stored fat: When autophagy is triggered, the body starts breaking down stored fat for energy, which can lead to weight loss over time.
Improving metabolic health: Autophagy also helps improve insulin sensitivity and metabolism, which further supports weight loss.

How to start IF to achieve weight loss and autophagy

Start with small, consistent fasts: Begin with a shorter, more manageable fast like 16:8, where you eat all your meals in an 8-hour window.
Avoid processed foods: Cut out sugars and processed foods before you begin your fasting journey.
Gradually increase fasting time: As you become accustomed to fasting, you can gradually increase the duration to trigger autophagy. This could mean progressively moving towards longer fasts or incorporating longer eating windows.
Consider longer fasts: Once you’ve built up to it, try longer fasts, as these can provide greater health benefits like enhanced autophagy.
