In 2025, YouTuber and chemist Drake Anthony, known by his pseudonym StyroPyro, unveiled what he claims is the world’s strongest handheld laser, dubbed Laser 2025. This device delivers a powerful output of 250 watts, making it approximately 50,000 times more potent than the 5 mW limit set for consumer laser pointers in the United States. Built from scratch using repurposed components—including a housing from a radar gun and high-power blue laser diodes sourced from the Chinese black market—Laser 2025 integrates advanced cooling systems, custom-built circuits, and overclocked electronics to manage its immense heat output.
The laser’s capabilities are extraordinary: it can instantly ignite wood, paper, and plastic, melt metals such as copper, aluminum, and titanium, weld razor blades with precision, and even synthesize synthetic rubies from aluminum oxide and chromium oxide. It has also been shown to fracture lab-grown diamonds and ignite lithium batteries. The device is entirely self-contained and portable, distinguishing it from larger industrial lasers that require external power and cooling.
Despite its power, the laser is legal for personal use in the U.S. under current regulations, provided it is not sold or used in public spaces. StyroPyro emphasizes responsible handling, requiring specialized protective eyewear and conducting tests in controlled environments. The device’s power far exceeds standard safety classifications, with StyroPyro noting that its eye hazards are “incomprehensible”. A video demonstrating the laser’s capabilities went viral, amassing over 2.8 million views and sparking widespread interest and discussion across media outlets and online communities.
While some sources have claimed other lasers, such as a 7.5-watt blue laser, to be the most powerful handheld device, these are significantly less powerful than the 250-watt Laser 2025 and are not comparable in output or capability. The Laser 2025 remains the most powerful handheld laser documented in 2025, representing a significant milestone in DIY engineering and portable high-power laser technology.
