The Best Sweater for Women With Big Boobs Is From American Apparel

Sweater weather lasts longer in Los Angeles than it does in New York, Chicago, or any of the other small Midwestern cities where I’ve lived. The general LA cold-weather look leans toward jean and motorcycle jackets (vegan leather, of course), but the classic knit sweater also thrives, even in a city so far from the influence of the New England Aesthetic.

I love a knit sweater myself, but knit sweaters don’t like me back nearly as much. Mainly because I’m, ahem, rather well-endowed on top.

Most warm knit sweaters don’t flatter a larger chest. The boxy shape means the fabric hangs off my breasts, eliminating any shape in my lower torso, and the heft of the knit adds volume. I call the resulting shape a “Top Blob.”

For years, my solution was to make the Tob Blob work. I’d buy the knit sweater a size up and wear the sleeves long, often covering my hands, so that the bulk of it was obvious and exaggerated. I’d pair it with my skinniest jeans, to emphasize my narrow hips and the curve of my butt and calves, and lace up my tiniest shoes, transforming the awkward shape into a capital-L Look. And then, I found the $68 Aslan Sweater from American Apparel.

The pullover knit is perfect for women with big boobs because it emphasizes and defines your chest (instead of hanging off your breasts like a sack) and cuts in at the waist to provide an actual shape (instead of hiding your body under a layer of knit bulk).

The bottom hem curves into a half circle that hits right above the belly button and hangs loose for an easy fit over T-shirts and most blouses. The slits on either side create shape and definition by accentuating the natural curves and lines of my body. The knit fabric is heavy enough to warm on a chilly fall night.

I found the mulberry color in my size at the Silver Lake location of the resale chain Crossroads Trading Company, and after two months of obsession, went to the American Apparel on Melrose Avenue to buy the other five colors (white, black, “outback,” “silver fox,” and “dark ocean blue”).

For women like me who would prefer to keep their bellies covered but still want that crop-top-sweater kind of vibe, the Aslan is perfect, and works great with a pair of high-waisted jeans. I wear mine with the Urban Outfitters Mom Jeans at least once a week. It also looks good over A-line dresses.

Before discovering the Aslan, I spent years trying to find a sweater to pair with my dresses that didn’t make the look too casual, like a cropped sweatshirt does. And I hate cardigans — they make me feel like I’ve purchased something from the little girls section and tried to fit it over my adult body.

While the exceptional aspect of this sweater is the way it flatters bigger breasts, it also looks great on smaller-chested women, too. My girlfriend borrowed my black Aslan and loved it so much she bought two for herself in different colors.

I’m not going to give up my Top Blob Look entirely — it’s a look that makes me feel sexy and fashionable, just like the Aslan Sweater does. But the Top Blob Look doesn’t work every day, and what the Aslan Sweater provides is a versatile, everyday knit option, which women of every breast size deserve.
