Rope Thickness for Rigging

For uprigging in arenas or stagehand work, a 5/8″ (16mm) solid braid multifilament polypropylene or 5/8″ dynamic line is generally preferred due to its balance of strength, durability, and comfort during extended use. Some experienced riggers also recommend 3/4″ single braid polypropylene for hand-over-hand pulling, especially for long lengths like 130 feet, as it is more comfortable on the hands. However, 5/8″ double braid is often used for load-outs due to its superior durability and resistance to wear.

For down rigging, 5/8″ rope is still commonly used, but 1/2″ rope can be acceptable depending on the height and pulley system in place. Some riggers prefer 1/2″ Samson Arbormaster Blue Streak or spun Dacron rope for higher grids or long pulls (e.g., 80′ or more), as these materials offer good grip and performance under tension.

In general, 5/8″ is considered the standard and most versatile diameter for both uprigging and down rigging, especially when using pulleys or handling heavy loads. Thicker ropes like 3/4″ can be heavier and harder to manage over long distances, so they are typically reserved for specific situations where hand comfort and grip are prioritized over weight and pulley compatibility.
