WNBA players recently garnered attention for wearing shirts that read “Pay Us What You Owe Us” during the All-Star warmups. This protest highlights the players’ demands for increased salaries, a better revenue-sharing model, and improved benefits during ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
This demand for higher salaries comes amidst reports of WNBA financial losses. The league was projected to lose $40 million in 2024, an increase from the previously reported average annual loss of $10 million. Some reports even suggest the WNBA’s losses may have reached $50 million in 2024, despite record-breaking viewership and increased sponsorship revenue. In fact, the WNBA delivered $136 million in sponsor media value in 2024, according to SportsPro.
The revenue-sharing model in the WNBA is a key point of contention. Currently, WNBA players reportedly receive a smaller percentage of league revenue compared to players in other professional leagues like the NBA. Some argue that while the WNBA is losing money, the projected increase in media rights revenue (from roughly $45 million annually to $200 million annually starting in 2026) could make the league profitable and justify higher player salaries in the future.
The WNBA is also expanding, with plans to add more teams in the coming years. While some believe this expansion could lead to further losses, it could also generate more revenue from sources like expansion fees.
The WNBA players’ fight for higher salaries and a more equitable revenue share is part of a larger conversation about the economic realities of professional women’s sports. While there’s a significant pay disparity between the WNBA and the NBA, the women’s sports industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with revenues expected to surpass $1 billion in 2024. Investors are increasingly attracted to women’s sports due to factors like growing viewership, sponsorship opportunities, and the potential for a higher return on investment compared to men’s sports.
