The 2026 midterm elections in Ohio will feature high-stakes races for governor, U.S. Senate, the Ohio Supreme Court, and all statewide executive offices, marking a pivotal political shift as Governor Mike DeWine is term-limited.
The gubernatorial race is shaping up to be highly competitive, with Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Dr. Amy Acton emerging as the likely frontrunners, with polls at the end of 2025 indicating a close contest.
Ramaswamy has expressed ambitions to win the governor’s race by a “seismic margin,” signaling both confidence and a potential national political strategy, possibly positioning himself for a future presidential run.
Democrats view 2026 as their best opportunity in years to regain a statewide executive office, which they have not won since the 2000s, and a victory by Acton could revitalize the state party.
The U.S. Senate race will pit incumbent Republican Jon Husted, who assumed office less than two years prior after JD Vance became Vice President, against former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who is seeking a political comeback after losing in 2024.
Brown’s decision to run for Senate instead of governor was seen as a boost for national Democrats aiming to regain control of the U.S. Senate, though it left state Democrats without a top-tier candidate for the governor’s race.
Polls show the Senate race between Husted and Brown is also expected to be extremely close, mirroring the tight governor’s race.
Ohio’s 15 U.S. House seats will be on the ballot, with new congressional maps adopted by the Ohio Redistricting Commission potentially increasing Republican advantages in districts held by Democrats such as Greg Landsman and Marcy Kaptur.
Democrats may target six Republican-held Ohio House seats to break the GOP supermajority, which would prevent Republicans from overriding a governor’s veto, particularly in districts where Trump’s 2024 margin was under 5 percentage points.
A significant change to Ohio election law eliminates the four-day grace period for counting absentee ballots, requiring all mail-in ballots to be received by Election Day—a move supporters say aligns Ohio with most states, while critics argue it may suppress turnout and respond to political pressure.
The primary election is scheduled for May 5, 2026, with voter registration deadlines set for April 6 (primary) and October 5 (general), and early in-person voting beginning October 6.
Multiple citizen-initiated ballot measures are being pursued, including efforts to abolish property taxes, expand voting access by removing photo ID requirements, codify anti-discrimination protections including for sexual orientation and gender identity, and eliminate qualified immunity for police officers.
A business-backed campaign called Ohioans for Cannabis Choice is working to repeal Senate Bill 56, which restricts intoxicating hemp products to state-licensed dispensaries, and aims to collect 248,092 signatures by March 2026 to place the issue on the November ballot.
The state legislature may also propose a constitutional amendment recognizing a “right to hunt and fish,” adding to the list of potential ballot issues.
Local ballot issues are already emerging, such as a proposed fire and emergency medical services levy in Vermilion Township, Erie County, which would increase millage to generate approximately $1.12 million annually for ongoing services beginning in 2026.
