A New Type Of Nuclear Fusion Machine Has Come To Life

A new type of nuclear fusion machine, the Fusion Z-pinch Experiment 3 (FuZE-3) developed by Zap Energy, has achieved a significant milestone by generating plasma with electron pressures up to 830 megapascals (MPa), or 1.6 gigapascals (GPa) total—comparable to pressures found deep within Earth’s crust. This breakthrough demonstrates progress in compact fusion designs that could lead to more efficient and scalable fusion energy systems.

Fusion Z-pinch Experiment 3 (FuZE-3): This compact fusion device has successfully reached extreme plasma pressures, marking a key advancement in z-pinch fusion technology, which uses electrical currents to compress plasma into a dense, high-energy state. The achievement is notable because it shows that smaller, potentially more cost-effective fusion systems can reach conditions previously thought to require much larger machines.
China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST): As of January 9, 2026, EAST has broken the long-standing Greenwald density limit by stabilizing plasma at densities 1.3 to 1.65 times beyond the theoretical threshold, a major step toward sustained fusion reactions. This success, achieved through precise control of fuel gas pressure and electron cyclotron resonance heating, suggests a viable path for future tokamak reactors to operate at higher, more efficient densities.
ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor): The world’s largest tokamak, under construction in southern France, has achieved first plasma as of October 31, 2023, confirming the machine’s basic functionality. While full fusion experiments are still two years away, this milestone marks a critical phase in the project’s development toward demonstrating industrial-scale fusion energy.
MIT-CFS SPARC Project: Though not yet operational, the SPARC tokamak, designed by MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, is a testbed for high-temperature superconducting magnets that enable stronger magnetic fields in a smaller device. If successful, SPARC will validate a new fusion design that could lead to net energy production and pave the way for the full-scale ARC power plant.

These developments collectively indicate a growing diversity in fusion approaches, with compact, high-pressure systems like FuZE-3 and advanced tokamaks like EAST and SPARC pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the pursuit of practical fusion energy.
