Palantir's Alex Karp on government surveillance, AI and the Democratic party - The Axios Show

The Axios Show (Episode 5), aired in early November 2025, Palantir CEO Alex Karp discussed the geopolitical and social implications of AI, the reality of modern surveillance, and his critique of the Democratic Party’s current direction.

On Government Surveillance

Karp argued that public anxiety over a government “surveillance state” is largely misplaced compared to the tracking done by private corporations.

Corporate vs. State Tracking: He stated that Americans are monitored far more closely by private companies for commercial purposes than by the government.
The Global Trade-off: Karp warned that if the U.S. does not win the AI race, the alternative is a world defined by China’s surveillance model, which would result in “far fewer rights” globally.
Targeted Surveillance: He defended the use of surveillance technology when it is limited to specific threats, such as stopping terrorists or predators, but noted that expanding it to “normal citizens” is something “no one wants”.

On AI and Social Stability

Karp positioned AI as a tool that must benefit the broader workforce to avoid catastrophic social outcomes.

Risks of Inequality: He cautioned that AI could lead to “dysfunction and even violence” if its economic benefits are not shared with vocationally trained workers, such as those on “factory floors”.
National Security: He reiterated that the U.S. must “absorb a lot of risk” in developing AI to maintain Western primacy.

On the Democratic Party

Karp, a self-described “former progressive,” offered a sharp critique of the party’s current alignment.

Private vs. Public Stance: He claimed many Democrats privately admit that radical progressive ideas (specifically mentioning New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani) are “impractical” but lack the courage to say so publicly.
Cultural Disconnect: He argued the party is alienating “high-testosterone males” and neglecting the concerns of underclass voters, which he finds “unappealing”.
Policy Shifts: While previously critical of Donald Trump, Karp has “softened his stance,” describing him as a “peace president” and expressing support for his border and national security policies.

Personal Reflection

During the interview, Karp also shared a rare personal moment, recounting a story that reportedly “brought him to tears,” reflecting a more humanized side of the often-combative CEO.
