Getting Started with Claude Cowork: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Claude Cowork (introduced in early 2026) is an agentic feature within the Claude Desktop application that allows the AI to directly interact with your computer’s files and software. Unlike traditional chatbot interfaces, Cowork is designed for multi-step, autonomous, “agentic” tasks, such as organizing folders, analyzing data, and creating documents.

Prerequisites: Requires a paid Claude subscription (Pro or Max) and the Claude Desktop app (currently macOS only, Windows support is planned).
Safety Warning: Claude can create, edit, and delete files. Always create a dedicated “sandbox” folder for Cowork and avoid giving it access to your entire home directory.

Step-by-Step Setup:

Install/Update: Download the latest Claude Desktop app from claude.com/download.
Enable Cowork: In the app, go to Settings -> Features -> Enable Cowork.
Choose Folder: Click “Cowork” in the sidebar and click “Choose Folder” to grant access to a specific project folder.

Getting “Certified” or Demonstrating Proficiency

As of early 2026, there is no formal “Anthropic-issued” certificate for Claude Cowork. However, you can show proficiency through:

Creating a CLAUDE.md File: Create a .claude/CLAUDE.md file in your workspace to outline rules, coding style, or project context, demonstrating advanced use of the tool.
