Praxis: The Tech-Backed Plan to Replace Democracy

Praxis (formally the Praxis Society) is a venture-backed company aimed at building a new “network state”—a private, tech-governed city intended to function as a sovereign or semi-sovereign entity. Founded by Dryden Brown and Charlie Callinan, the project is part of a broader movement among Silicon Valley elites to create “startup nations” that bypass traditional democratic governance.

Core Philosophy and Vision

The Network State Concept: Praxis draws heavily from the “network state” model popularized by Balaji Srinivasan, which proposes that online communities can eventually transition into physical territories with diplomatic recognition.
Alternative to Democracy: The project is often described as an “exit” from liberal democracy, prioritizing property rights, entrepreneurial citizenship, and technological efficiency over traditional democratic participation.
“Digital Nation”: Praxis markets itself as the world’s first “Digital Nation” dedicated to restoring Western Civilization and pursuing technological advancement, including space colonization.

Key Backers and Funding

The project is supported by a network of high-profile tech investors often associated with “techno-optimist” or libertarian ideologies:

Peter Thiel: A primary influencer and early backer through his firm, Pronomos Capital.
Other Investors: Includes Marc Andreessen, Sam Altman (OpenAI), and Brian Armstrong (Coinbase).
Recent Funding: In October 2024, Praxis announced a $525 million financing round to accelerate its city-building efforts.

Proposed Locations

While initially targeting the Mediterranean coast, Praxis has recently shifted its focus to other strategic areas:

Greenland: Following the 2024 U.S. election, Dryden Brown expressed interest in Greenland as a potential site for a “freedom city,” aligning with some billionaire-backed interests in acquiring or developing the territory.
Vandenberg Space Force Base: The company has proposed “Atlas,” a defense-focused spaceport city on federal land in California, intended to revitalize American industrial prowess.

Criticisms and Concerns

Digital Authoritarianism: Critics argue the model replaces public accountability with “corporate dictatorship,” using surveillance and exclusionary policies to maintain order.
Dystopian Rhetoric: Analysts have noted the project’s “apocalyptic manifesto” and its ties to thinkers who question the compatibility of freedom and democracy.
Feasibility: Despite raising significant capital, Praxis has faced skepticism regarding its ability to navigate the complex geopolitical and logistical challenges of building a new sovereign city.
