The Psychology of the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind is a significant aspect of human cognition that operates below the level of conscious awareness, influencing thoughts, actions, and decisions without direct knowledge. It serves as an unlimited memory bank that permanently stores every life experience, processing approximately four billion bits of data per second and accounting for roughly 95% of brain activity.

Habitual conscious thoughts train the subconscious mind by imprinting beliefs, fears, and desires, which then automatically influence behavior to reinforce those conclusions. For instance, if a person habitually thinks they are lonely, the subconscious mind concludes they are lonely and subsequently influences them to act in ways that perpetuate that loneliness.

Function: It manages automatic bodily functions (like breathing and digestion) and retrieves memories that are not immediately accessible to conscious recall.
Decision Making: Research indicates the subconscious can make decisions up to ten seconds before a person consciously perceives the need to act.

Driving on Autopilot: Navigating a familiar route home while your mind is completely preoccupied with a conversation, only to realize you don’t remember the last five minutes of driving.
Habitual Actions: Performing complex, learned sequences without thinking, such as brushing your teeth, typing on a keyboard, or tying shoelaces.
Automatic Breathing: Your body continues to breathe and maintain circulation without any conscious effort.
“Gut” Feelings/Intuition: A sudden feeling of mistrust for someone or a “hunch” about a situation based on the subconscious processing of cues you didn’t consciously notice.
Dreaming: Experiencing vivid imagery during sleep, which often reflects repressed memories, unresolved emotions, or processed daily events.

It does not process negatives: If you say “I will not fail,” the subconscious hears “I will fail” and acts on the “fail” command.
It works on familiar path: It resists change to maintain comfort zones, causing discomfort when you attempt to change established habits.
Reprogramming: The subconscious can be influenced through repeated positive affirmations, visualization, and emotional immersion in a desired outcome.
