Miners compete to solve complex cryptographic puzzles using Proof of Work

Proof of Work (PoW) is a consensus mechanism where miners compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles, and the first miner to find a valid solution gains the right to add a new block of transactions to the blockchain. This process requires significant computational resources, typically using algorithms like SHA-256 in Bitcoin, to ensure network security and prevent fraud such as double spending.

Once a miner solves the puzzle, the solution is broadcast to the network for verification by other nodes; if the solution is correct, the new block is added to the chain, and the miner receives a reward consisting of newly minted cryptocurrency and transaction fees. The difficulty of these puzzles adjusts automatically (e.g., every 2,016 blocks in Bitcoin) to maintain a consistent block creation time, ensuring the network remains decentralized and resistant to control by any single entity.
