They Say Women Can Do The Same Thing As Men, But Is It Good For The Greater Good?

The impact of women performing the same roles as men on the greater good is debated, with some arguing that equality leads to greater human development while others suggest that ignoring biological differences may be counterproductive.

John Stuart Mill argued in his 1869 essay The Subjection of Women that removing legal and social barriers for women would double the mass of mental faculties available for humanity’s service, ultimately benefiting society through the liberation of half the population’s potential. He believed that allowing women to compete freely would not only improve individual lives but also enrich the intellectual development of men through female competition and companionship.

Conversely, some critics contend that the claim “women can do everything men can do” is false and potentially harmful because it ignores vital biological and physical differences, such as average strength and reproductive roles. Arguments from various perspectives suggest that while men and women are equal in value, forcing direct competition or claiming one sex is inherently better than the other can harm society by devaluing unique contributions, such as childbearing and nurturing, which are essential for human survival.

Ultimately, the view on whether this is “good” depends on whether one prioritizes individual merit and equal opportunity or distinct, complementary roles based on biological and traditional norms.
