The 7 Levels of Internet

The idea of the internet having “7 levels” is a popular myth often depicted in viral iceberg diagrams. While the internet does have layered structures (like the OSI model or the surface/deep/dark web), the notion of seven progressively mysterious and dangerous levels is largely fictional, originating from online forums and creepypasta stories rather than technical reality.

The 7 Layers of the Internet, defined by the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model, describe the process of network communication from physical hardware to software applications. It enables data to travel from a sender to a receiver through structured layers: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.

10 Examples of Internet Technologies Across Layers

[Ethernet Cable (Layer 1)]: Physically connects devices to a network via copper cables.
[Wi-Fi (Layer 1/2)]: Uses radio waves to transmit data frames without wires.
[MAC Address (Layer 2)]: A unique identifier assigned to a Network Interface Controller (NIC).
[Switch (Layer 2)]: Connects devices within a LAN and uses MAC addresses to route data.
[Router (Layer 3)]: Directs packets between different networks based on IP addresses.
[IP Address (Layer 3)]: Logical address used to identify a device on the internet.
