According to Arthur Brooks, a professor at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, civilization is facing a “crisis of meaning” rather than a political or economic one. Data indicates a sharp rise starting around 2008–2009 in young adults reporting that their lives feel meaningless, a phenomenon Brooks terms a “psychogenic epidemic.” This correlates directly with the widespread adoption of smartphones, which the average American checks 205 times a day.
Brooks argues that unhappiness stems from losing one’s “why.” In his experience teaching students, he notes an increasing inability to answer fundamental questions like “Why are you alive?” and “For what would you give your life?” treating them as unanswerable rather than engaging with them.
Why Phones Destroy Meaning
The core issue lies in how smartphones alter brain function and problem-solving approaches. Drawing on the work of neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist, Brooks distinguishes between two types of problems:
- Complicated Problems: These are hard to solve but have definitive answers (e.g., building a skyscraper). They engage the left hemisphere of the brain, which deals with information and things.
- Complex Problems: These are easy to understand but impossible to “solve” permanently (e.g., maintaining a marriage, finding purpose). They engage the right hemisphere, which handles love, faith, and meaning.
Smartphones trap users in a left-hemispheric simulation of life. By constantly offering solvable, information-based tasks (scrolling, clicking, gaming), devices starve the right brain of the struggle required to find meaning. Brooks compares this existence to living in The Matrix: a comfortable simulation that lacks the depth of real human experience. Furthermore, phones act as “anti-boredom devices,” preventing the brain from entering the “default mode network“—a rest state essential for daydreaming, creativity, and processing life’s big questions.
Digital consumption and smartphone usage can erode a sense of purpose, a challenge that can be addressed by applying biblical principles and King James Version (KJV) verses to cultivate intentional living. By focusing on practices such as redeeming time and setting affections on spiritual matters, users can restructure their digital habits to rebuild meaning.
| Modern Tech Struggle | KJV Guiding Verse | KJV Text | Actionable Rebuilding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mindless Scrolling | Ephesians 5:15-16 | “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” | Set hard limits on app usage. |
| Constant Distractions | Psalm 46:10 | “Be still, and know that I am God…” | Practice moments of intentional, device-free quiet. |
| Idolatry of Devices | Matthew 6:24 | “No man can serve two masters…” | Remove distracting apps to regain focus. |
| The Comparison Trap | 1 Samuel 16:7 | “…for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” | Limit social media to avoid shallow comparisons. |
| Dopamine Addiction | Colossians 3:2 | “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” | Turn off notifications to prevent compulsive checking. |
| Anxiety and Fear | Philippians 4:6 | “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” | Pray instead of opening your phone during stressful moments. |
| Unwholesome Speech | Ephesians 4:29 | “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth…” | Refrain from participating in toxic online arguments. |
| Lack of Deep Wisdom | Proverbs 3:5 | “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” | Seek truth in scripture rather than searching the web for every question. |
| Seeking Man’s Validation | Galatians 1:10 | “…for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” | Reduce self-promotion and seeking validation through “likes”. |
| Superficial Connections | 1 Corinthians 13:4 | “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,” | Prioritize face-to-face, loving fellowship over digital chatting. |
