NEVER Make These Tangem Wallet Mistakes!

Ledger users have lost approximately $86–90 million in a coordinated supply-chain attack involving an authorized reseller, CryptoBilis, which distributed tampered hardware wallets with pre-filled or compromised recovery phrases. Tangem and other cold storage providers highlight that $90M is an estimate, but the pattern indicates a sophisticated operation rather than simple phishing.

To use a cold storage wallet safely and avoid common mistakes, follow these critical guidelines:

1. Purchase Directly from Manufacturer
Never buy hardware wallets from third-party marketplaces, eBay, or unauthorized resellers. Devices can be tampered with internally to steal funds upon setup. If you bought a Ledger from CryptoBilis in the last 90 days, immediately move assets to a new device with a fresh recovery phrase.

2. Secure Your Recovery Phrase Offline
For traditional wallets like Ledger, the 24-word seed phrase is the sole key to your funds.

Write it on paper or stamp it into metal.
Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes, or type it into a computer/phone.
For Tangem wallets, which are seedless, you use physical backup cards (EAL6+ certified chips) instead of a written phrase, reducing human error risks.

3. Verify Addresses and Networks
When moving crypto to cold storage:

Always perform a small test transaction first to confirm the address and network compatibility.
Ensure the network selected on the exchange (e.g., Ethereum, Tron, Bitcoin) matches the network supported by your cold wallet for that specific token. Sending on the wrong network results in permanent loss.

4. Separate Hot and Cold Funds
Maintain a hot wallet for daily spending and small amounts, while keeping long-term holdings in cold storage. This limits exposure if your online device is compromised.

5. Beware of Fake Support
Legitimate wallet companies will never ask for your seed phrase, private key, or recovery cards. Ignore any unsolicited messages, fake letters, or websites claiming to be support.

Summary of Differences:

Ledger: Uses USB/Bluetooth, requires a 24-word seed phrase, and is vulnerable to supply-chain tampering if not bought directly.
Tangem: Uses NFC cards, is seedless (no written phrase), and uses redundant physical cards for backup, minimizing the risk of seed phrase leakage.
