SpaceX is not confirmed to be buying a cell phone provider, but is actively in talks with EchoStar to either acquire Boost Mobile outright or gain access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile. This move, reported by The Washington Post on November 2, 2026, is part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to launch Starlink Mobile as a major U.S. wireless carrier, following rejections from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile regarding direct network access.
The deal would provide SpaceX with an immediate subscriber base (Boost has ~7 million customers) and terrestrial infrastructure to complement its satellite network, targeting the $235 billion U.S. wireless market. Key recent steps include SpaceX’s $8 billion purchase of low-band spectrum licenses and negotiations for access to 80,000 cell sites. However, any acquisition of Boost’s leased network likely requires approval from AT&T and T-Mobile, which have already refused SpaceX direct access.
Regarding Tesla, while the search context mentions potential strategic questions for carriers and a proposal for a Tesla-SpaceX merger in the context of regulatory timing, there is no direct confirmation in the provided results of specific “big surprises” linking the Boost Mobile talks to Tesla operations or products. The primary focus remains on SpaceX’s independent push into terrestrial mobile services.
