The Feynman Technique — Stop Memorizing, Start Understanding

The process involves these four steps:

Choose a concept: Write down the specific topic you want to learn at the top of a blank page.
Teach it simply: Explain the concept in plain language, as if teaching a child or a beginner, avoiding jargon.
Identify gaps: Note where you struggle, rely on complex terms, or cannot explain clearly; return to source material to fill these gaps.
Simplify and refine: Review and simplify your explanation further, using analogies, until it is crystal clear and intuitive.

The 4 Steps of the Feynman Technique

Choose a Concept and Study: Select a topic you want to learn, grab a blank sheet of paper, and write the name of the topic at the top.
Teach it to a Child: Explain the concept in your own words, on the paper, as if you were teaching it to a 12-year-old. Avoid jargon and use simple language.
Identify Gaps and Review: Identify the points where you got stuck, couldn’t explain something, or used complex terminology. Go back to your source material to fill these gaps.
Simplify and Use Analogies: Refine your explanation further, creating analogies to make the concept easier to grasp. Test your explanation by explaining it aloud again without looking at notes.
