The assertion that the modern church is “terrified” to explain Romans 9 stems from the chapter’s intense focus on divine election, predestination, and God’s absolute sovereignty. Many congregations avoid the text because its hard teachings on human free will versus God’s choices can stir deep theological friction and debate.
Because Romans 9 directly tackles the question of why God chooses to show mercy to some and not others (e.g., “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated”), it is frequently bypassed in favor of less controversial topics.
However, rather than being an intimidating or arbitrary puzzle, the text actually serves to show that God’s overarching plan of salvation does not fail, while challenging believers to understand God’s purposes on His own terms.
Understanding the chapter fully requires untangling a few key elements:
- The Problem at Hand: Paul is writing to a deeply divided church in Rome that struggled to understand why the majority of ethnic Israel rejected Jesus as their Messiah, while the Gentiles (who were not part of the original covenant) were accepting the Gospel.
- Sovereign Choice: Paul underscores that salvation ultimately relies on God’s mercy, not on human lineage, effort, or desires. The potter has the right over the clay to make different vessels for different purposes.
- The Human Will & Responsibility: Paul anticipates the natural human objection: “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”. He answers this by firmly placing the responsibility on human sin and pride, while simultaneously pointing out that the Creator’s choices are completely just.
Rather than shrinking back from God’s sovereignty, many theologians argue that confronting chapters like Romans 9 is necessary to grasp the total picture of God’s grace, unsearchable judgments, and immense majesty.
What Does The KJV Bible Say?
Romans 9 is one of the most intensely debated chapters in the New Testament. Many modern churches avoid teaching it due to the tension between unconditional divine election (God’s absolute sovereignty) and human free will (the responsibility of faith).
The table below breaks down 10 key verses from the King James Version (KJV) alongside traditional interpretations of these controversial concepts.
| KJV Verse | The “Terrifying” (Sovereign) Interpretation | The “Free Will” Interpretation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rom 9:11 (For the children being not yet born… that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) | God unconditionally chooses individuals for salvation before they are born, entirely apart from their personal choices or good deeds. | Election is corporate and missional (the “how” of salvation), not an individual lottery for heaven or hell. |
| 2 | Rom 9:13 (Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.) | God sovereignly predestined Jacob to eternal life and Esau to eternal damnation prior to their births. | “Hate” here is a Hebrew idiom for loving less, referring to national destinies (Edom vs. Israel) rather than individual souls. |
| 3 | Rom 9:15 (…I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy…) | God operates as a totally autonomous entity; salvation is completely outside of human control. | God’s mercy is an expression of His consistent character, specifically extended to those who choose faith in His plan. |
| 4 | Rom 9:16 (So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.) | Human desire and effort play absolutely no role in who gets saved; it is 100% God’s selective doing. | Effort apart from faith yields nothing; God’s mercy is unearned, but it is received through faith, not arbitrarily granted. |
| 5 | Rom 9:17 (…Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up…) | God actively hardens specific people in sin to demonstrate His ultimate power and fulfill His predetermined wrath. | Pharaoh had already hardened his own heart repeatedly; God merely used his existing stubbornness as an object lesson. |
| 6 | Rom 9:18 (…and whom he will he hardeneth.) | God actively chooses to make certain individuals unbelieving, ensuring they cannot be saved. | God “hardens” by actively handing people over to their own sinful desires when they persistently reject Him. |
| 7 | Rom 9:19 (…For who hath resisted his will?) | Paul acknowledges that man cannot thwart God’s sovereign decrees, rendering all human resistance futile. | Man’s free will exists within God’s sovereign boundaries; humans can resist His will (as Israel did), but ultimately God wins. |
| 8 | Rom 9:20 (Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?) | Human beings have no right to question God’s decrees, including the decree of double predestination. | This silences those who complain that God offers grace to Gentiles on the same terms as Jews. |
| 9 | Rom 9:21 (Hath not the potter power over the clay… one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?) | God has created some human beings expressly for the purpose of damnation and others for salvation. | The clay represents nations, and the “dishonor” refers to God’s prerogative to judge and bypass unrepentant groups. |
| 10 | Rom 9:30 (…The Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness…) | God unilaterally forces righteousness onto Gentiles while forcibly blinding the Jews. | Gentiles received righteousness because they accepted the Gospel by faith; Israel missed it because they relied on works. |
