These Apps Are Spying On You Shut Them Off Now

Several popular applications have been identified for excessive data collection and sharing practices. Social media platforms are among the most significant offenders, with Meta apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads) sharing approximately 68.6% of collected data with third parties. Other major social networks including TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and X also rank high on privacy violation lists.

Surprisingly, gaming and utility apps are also major contributors to privacy loss. Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, and the language learning app Duolingo have been flagged for sharing user data, with Duolingo sharing about 20% of its collected data.
Weather apps like AccuWeather have historically been caught transmitting precise location data to third-party firms even when users disabled location services. Additionally, Trainline (a ticket search service) shares purchase history, contacts, and search data, while YouTube and various food-delivery apps are known to track usage habits extensively.

Critical Settings to Lock Down Immediately

To stop apps from spying on you, you must manually restrict permissions that are often granted by default. On Android, navigate to Settings > Security and privacy > Permission Manager to review access to your camera, microphone, and location. A crucial step often overlooked is disabling Bluetooth Scanning and Wi-Fi Scanning under Location Services, which allows apps to track your movements passively even when GPS is off. You should also delete your Advertising ID via Settings > Google > Ads to break the link advertisers use to profile your behavior across different apps.

How to Protect Yourself Without a VPN
