While there was no report of the Trump administration seizing $15 billion from a cartel leader, Mexico’s newly elected President, Claudia Sheinbaum, recently stated she would ask the U.S. to share $15 billion that was forfeited by Sinaloa cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
The Zambada case is not related to the Trump administration. His plea deal was made in a New York court in August 2025.
The Zambada case and Mexico’s request
- Plea agreement: On August 25, 2025, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García pleaded guilty to murder and drug trafficking charges in a New York court. He agreed to a $15 billion forfeiture money judgment as part of his plea deal.
- Mexico’s demand: After the guilty plea, President Sheinbaum held a press conference announcing that Mexico would ask the U.S. to return any funds recovered from Zambada’s forfeiture. She argued that the money belongs to the Mexican people, particularly the poor, to compensate for the harm inflicted by his criminal enterprise.

The potential transfer of funds to Mexico would be part of a complex process governed by U.S. law.
- International cooperation: The U.S. government has mechanisms to share forfeited assets with foreign countries that assist in a criminal investigation.
- Use of funds: The U.S. Department of Justice uses forfeited assets for several purposes, including compensating crime victims and strengthening law enforcement.
- Discretion of the Attorney General: The final decision on the distribution of forfeited assets, including repatriation to a foreign government, typically rests with the U.S. Attorney General.
